Question To Ask For Interior Design

Over many years as an Interior Designer, what would be 3 major shifts in consumer preferences during that time?

One thing that comes to mind right away is the shift from stain grade cabinets to paint grade cabinets. White kitchens are back! Clients are trending more towards lighter and brighter over the red/orangey tones of the last decade. Flooring has changed quite a bit with more clients opting for LVP (luxury vinyl plank) throughout their house. LVP has come so far, and is now super durable, easy to maintain and looks crazy real. Thirdly, quartz countertops are now becoming the standard. I rarely spec granite anymore. Quartz is so easy to maintain vs granite and the colors and patterns that are available now mimic everything from natural marble to exotic granites.

What are some future ideas and predictions going forward? Any new trends that may be taking place in 2018/19 and beyond?

Natural woods are very popular right now: hand scraped, wide plank barn board flooring as well as overtly distressed furniture pieces. What is also starting to come forward in design is more of a traditional style again. Details on everything and the use of rich jewel tones are hot right now along with warm metal tones (yes brass is back but in an updated way!).

What are some of the challenges to face in helping customers realize their dream renovation?

A lot of clients are afraid to trust their style intuition. They often fight between their heart and their brain over what they want. Often, they are trying to force themselves to change color palettes or styles from their last house and sometimes its way out of their comfort zone. I always tell clients to listen to their gut. Their home is their sanctuary and they need to feel comfortable, relaxed and love being home.

Are there certain types of renovations that tend to bring the greatest value to the selling price of a home?

Kitchens, Ensuites and basement developments are always the spaces people use the most, therefore increase the value of your home. Those rooms are the ones potential home buyers are looking at predominately because they know those are the areas they will spend the most time in.

How does one get ideas or inspiration to help guide them when considering renovation options?

I will often suggest that clients send me photos of homes, rooms, styles, products that they find on home d├ęcor sites. Often clients don’t know what their style is, so if they can show me pictures of things they like, then I can usually understand them better. Visiting showhomes is also an excellent way to find inspiration and new ideas.

Guide To Choose Colours For Your Home

Redecorating your home is an essential task and a lot of people fret about it because it is also something which requires splurging on a large-scale if you are thinking of a complete makeover.

Colours play a vital role in everyone’s life and no one in the world is skeptical about it or have a conflicting thought. Well, when you want to make a change in your home and want to be playful with colours, it’s important to know the colour psychology as few of them are vivacious and energetic while others may be cool and calm and relaxing.

Here we are going to discuss about the ways you can bring in colours to you life…

1. Give your walls a life

Adding vibrancy in your room is always a great option to bring in a beautiful positive aura into your space. One of the trendy ways of doing it could be focussing on just a single wall and giving it a complete transformation while keeping the rest in simple tones. Just adding a beautiful floral pattern or a cheeky colourful wallpaper to one of the walls in your room can shift the focal point in no time. You can choose either bold and contrasting colour theme or a subtle colour palette depending upon your personal preference.

2. Giving your nook or alcove a desired splash

Why not splash your reading or resting sessions with amazing rainbow colours for a unique and creative look and feel. These places always catch the attention at first sight and you should be careful in choosing the right colour to give them a revamp in style.

3. Make good use of pillows and cushions in your living space

Nothing can come out more appealing than few strategically scattered pillows and cushions on your sofa or a chair. Try opting for a multicoloured floral patterned cushion or a pillow to entice in a vibrancy factor in your living space.

These cushions and pillows will bring in the comforting element while adding to the style quotient as well. Choose the right fabric depending upon the right season like for spring, it is recommended to go for linen or cotton as they allow the fabric to breathe.

4. Bringing in the nature is always a good idea

Natural plants and flowers are the best ways to inculcate the best of the colours into your decor. With spring season on the cards, try opting for seasonal flowers like tulips, daffodils and bluebells; three of the most common flowers to spruce up your indoor area. They will infuse the best of the colours while adding a touch of mother nature into your decor.

5. Add some colours to your floor as well

With the rest of the room being taken care of, it is now time to add some colours to your floor. The market is full of modern and designer rugs available in amazing colours to fill in your space with the best of the colours possible. Not just the colours, you have got an impressive range of designs and patterns which can add an x-factor to your room in no time.

Tips To Buying Rug

As the owner of an Oriental Rug gallery for many years, I have purchased thousands of handmade rugs. In the beginning, the process was a bit daunting and I was somewhat overwhelmed but as time passed, I learned from experience and study and now would like to share some of my insight with you today.

Important points when looking at a potential purchase of an Oriental rug.

Number 1

Colors! Do you find the colors of the rug to be aesthetically pleasing? Do the colors in the rug give you a pleasant feeling of joy and happiness? If yes, this is a great start.

Number 2

Quality of the materials. If the rug is wool, as most hand-woven rugs are, is the wool good quality? Good quality wool will not be dry or scratchy to the touch and should be quite resilient. If you push on it, does it spring back? Hand-spun wool from healthy sheep is durable and will last for many years. If the rug is silk, it should glisten like the sun and will be cold to the touch. If a “fake silk” often called “art silk” it will be much less expensive and not very tightly knotted. Beware of these “art silk” rugs as they are mercerized cotton and there is no silk in the rug.

Number 3

Do you like the drawing? The drawing is the design layout of the rug. It can be geometric based or floral or anything in between. Is it too busy? Too flowery? If you love the colors but do not like the design, my advice is to pass on the rug. Do not purchase it. You must like both. Always honor your taste!

Number 4

Will the size work for your needs? A little bigger or a little smaller should not stop you from making a purchase but if the rug in question is a totally wrong size, time to let it go.

Number 5

Are you able to try the rug “on an approval basis” which means, you can take the rug home and ensure it looks wonderful in the spot you have in mind. All dealers of repute will allow you to do this and some dealers, such as myself, will even ship rugs, on an approval basis.

Number 6

Do you love it? The more you look at the right rug, the prettier it becomes. Good quality hand-woven rugs with beautiful colors and interesting designs never stop giving. They will never become boring and as time moves forward, you will enjoy them every day of your life.

My last words of advice: Be, very, very careful if you start obsessing on all things rugs. This art form can be very addicting and then you may have to become a rug dealer so can do this all the time!

All About Modern Architecture

The United States is seeing a huge building boom that is changing many city landscapes very quickly. The new style of architecture that mixes modern and contemporary styles seems to be winning. The evidence is easy to see in how long it takes a new home to sell. Today’s buyers want the modern look, and they are paying up for the modern and contemporary style. Here are 4 home renovation ideas that can help achieve that look.

  1. Open Concept Living Spaces
  2. Eat-In Kitchens
  3. Metals and Wood Stairs
  4. Industrial Accent Materials

Nothing says modern like open concept living spaces. One of the best ways to change a home’s feel is to open up the living, dining and kitchen into one large living space. Not only is this style in demand, but it also is very functional. The idea of open concept living areas gives the home a social environment.Eat-in kitchens are a must, as it works directly with the open concept living space. It is a functional design that allows social interaction between the kitchen and the table. It is perfect for entertaining and if you have children it lets you keep an eye on them while you cook, watch the game, or clean up.

Metal and wood staircases not only give a very modern look but they are also highly functional. They are much safer than wood stairs and they allow for a variety of accent materials such as wood, glass or stone stair treads. Modern styles work well with high end accents and they give the home an elegant feel. Metal stairs can be used indoors and outdoors. One signature look of the modern home is the clean lines of metal handrails that are used on balconies and stars.

The most defining feature of modern style home is the simple use of industrial materials such as stone, concrete, steel and glass. Many modern architects like to use new materials that are strong and last long. Using clean simple lines with different materials give this style it’s clean look. Some accent features that are common in many home renovations are using stone tile for walls, thick glass for doors/ balcony handrails, and even reclaimed materials such as wood from old barns and buildings. Even industrial style barn doors on a open track are used.

In the end, you can get that modern look by simply dressing up a few key items in your home.
